These need so much attention since poc are typically the targets of these. I feel like women of color historically have been the biggest victims of these. And still are.
Statistically women of color have been targeted for this type of abuse more than white women, but this likely had more to do with the fact that women of color were often less educated and therefore an easier victim. Still worth reblogging though!

The quote above does not turn up any results in Google outside of Tumblr; but in 2009, Muntazer al-Zaidi wrote “Why I threw the shoe” about his reasoning & actions. He deserves not to be misquoted & to actually have his own words heard & elevated.
The Washington Post has an article up about al-Zaidi for the tenth anniversary of the shoe throwing incident, that also goes into more detail on the political context at hand & how al-Zaidi was imprisoned and tortured afterwards.
His bravery & conviction are commendable, and both those articles are worth the read.

I want people, in particular cis people, to read this and understand what it means.
It means that these groups, these organizations, are so Hellbent on getting trans people outlawed, hurt, and killed, that they will openly lie and admit to lying to stir up emotions. They have no qualms with actively lying and distorting reality.
They have no qualms about misleading people. Actively lying to people.
They don’t care how immoral their actions may be, how much their rhetoric flies in the face of reality, as long as it reaches their end goal of the destruction of “transgender ideology.”
MassResistance and all their ilk want us dead, and should never be trusted, not even for the most trivial of matters. They should be rejected, reviled, despised, because nothing they do is in service of anything but hatred and evil.

What these safety concerns were fabricated as a proxy for—not genuine (but harder to argue) concerns but utter rejection of the “ideology” of “mentally dysfunctional men wearing dresses”.
Their enemy is not (just) trans people but “the LGBT lobby”; i.e. any and all LGBT/queer people.
TERFs, and others that align with these people (or are happy to use their arguments), may be happy to present themselves as representing women and/or lesbians, but it is evident that they do not have their interests at heart.
Q:Once, I encountered the funny story of an AI image descriptor with a sheep obsession. It had been trained on pictures of fields of sheep. Therefore, it tagged anything in a field as 'sheep', including an empty field, because they work on statistical probability. Therefore, it thinks "ah, a field! there's probably a sheep here." (It's a bit more complicated but basically that.) It also couldn't recognise sheep in places that weren't fields, such as petrol stations or barns. [cont]
Now, the alarming aspect of this story is that the very same technology is probably what tumblr is using to identify porn. Now, if it can’t tell that an empty field is not, in fact, full of sheep, what hope do we have that it can’t tell an empty room isn’t full of writing human forms engaged in passionate coitus?

…. oh my fucking god they actually are using open source software. They’re using a fucking one-layer unidirectional bicategory tag-trained neural network. This will never work. Literally, it will never work. There’s just not enough algorithmic complexity to do what they’re asking of it. I bet you I could prove on a mathematical level that this joke of a neural net fundamentally lacks the abstraction necessary to do its job.
This will never get better. Their algorithm will never stop fucking up, it will never actually flag porn reliably and it will always require a massive quantity of human hours to deal with the deluge of mistagged pictures. This isn’t just a case of an insufficiently trained algorithm, it’s just … this is the most basic neural network you can make. It probably hasa a lot of neurons and has loads of training data but like … you can’t just brute force this kind of stuff. One layer of neurons is just Not Enough.
Also, just to make this clear, Tumblr lied. I mean, we already know this, but I mean they liiiieeeeed. All that stuff they promised about what would or would not be censored? That cannot be delivered on with a system this simple. Nude classical sculptures, political protests, male-presenting nipples (really Tumblr?), nude art outside the context of sex, all that? You cannot train a bicategory one-layer neural network to exclude those things. It cannot be done. Tumblr never intended for those things to actually be permitted, they were just lying. Because the system they have cannot actually do what they said it would and never will be able to.
Also, this kind of system is super vulnerable to counter-neural strategies. I bet you before the end of the month someone hooks up their own open source one layer bicategory neural network which puts an imperceptible (to humans) layer of patterned static over arbitrary images, and trains it by having it bot-post static-ed images to Tumblr and reinforcing based on whether the images are labeled nsfw or sfw. Seriously, within a month someone will have an input-output machine which can turn any image ‘sfw’ in Tumblr’s eyes.
This is genuinely pathetic. Like, I have real pity for whoever implemented this, because it’s clear Tumblr doesn’t actually have any engineers with any expertise with machine learning left at all and they foisted the job off on some poor bastard who has no idea what they’re doing and is going to get all kinds of flak for their (perfectly reasonable and predetermined) failure from management.
Two people have been arrested for allegedly attacking a 16-year-old Jewish boy last week in Forest Hills, and members of the Jewish community are asking the NYPD to classify the incident as a hate crime.
According to the NYPD, two males, ages 17 and 18, were arrested on Thursday. The two are in custody at the 112th Precinct in Queens and were awaiting charges.
“It’s not a hate crime, and the victim is in stable condition,” said Detective Annette Shelton, a spokesperson for the NYPD.
The boy, David Paltielov, remains at Elmhurst Hospital one week after the attack, which took place on November 29. He suffered lacerations, swelling and contusions on his head and body.
The conclusion by the police that it wasn’t a hate crime is at odds with that of the Bukharian Jewish immigrant community, especially in the wake of multiple recent attacks and hate crimes against Jewish New Yorkers. According to the Alliance for Bukharian Americans, some witnesses heard the attackers scream anti-Semitic phrases such as “Kill the Jew.”
Yaniv Meirov, the CEO of the Chazaq organization, which also represents the Bukharian Jewish immigrant community, said it was “100 percent in my opinion a hate crime.”
According to Meirov and witnesses of the attack, at around 5 p.m., Paltielov was exiting Munch Place, a kosher eatery in Forest Hills, when he was attacked by a group of teenagers.
“This is a big group of guys, we understand twenty to thirty guys,” said Meirov. “And they start stepping on him, stamping on him. Punching him.”
Paltielov, who attends a yeshiva in Forest Hills, was wearing orthodox clothing, including a kippeh [sic], or skullcap, and tzitzit, which Meirov said “are fringes on the corners of his shirt.”
One witness, Waleska Mendez, emerged from Masbia, a Jewish-run soup kitchen located on 64th Road in Forest Hills, where she volunteers. She was working inside when she heard the commotion.
“When I went out I saw the kid next to the tree, already on the floor. All the gang was kicking and punching him. So I started screaming ‘Leave him alone!’”
She rushed back in, grabbed a broom and ran back out, wielding it as a weapon.
…She immediately turned her attention to the crowd of young onlookers, many of whom were recording the attack on their phones.
“That was really pissing me off,” she said, adding that she exchanged profanities with them.
“One of them was trying to get on top of me. I just throw the broom, and said ‘You want to fight? Let’s do it.’”
…Jewish community members have been observing safety precautions after a spate of incidents, including an assault against a Hasidic man in Brooklyn. In Forest Hills, Meirov said they’ve been warned to always walk in pairs.
The fact that the victim in Forest Hills was visibly Jewish, said Meirov, has led many in the community to question the NYPD’s initial response. The community and local elected officials met with police officials on Monday. Another community forum is scheduled for Thursday evening.
Update: (…) At Thursday’s community forum, the NYPD stressed that the investigation is ongoing. They are trying to obtain as much street camera video as they can. They also noted that there were conflicting accounts as to whether the victim was in fact dressed in Orthodox clothing and raised the possibility that this was a case of mistaken identity.

This is based on a drastic misunderstanding of what Mastodon is. It’s not a social media site like tumblr - it’s open-source code that allows anyone to create a social media site, which can then interact with other sites using that code. To say Mastodon has “lax regulations” is really misleading, because Mastodon itself has no regulations, it only has tools for moderators to regulate their own instances
Mastodon “allows” pedophiles in the same way that email “allows” identity theft scams. No, “email” doesn’t put a stop to identity theft, but “email” is just a set of protocols for sending messages - it’d be absurd to expect it to
Most Mastodon instances (including mastodon.social, the largest and oldest) do more to keep pedophiles off their platform than tumblr ever has, by having strict rules against it, banning any instances that don’t have strict rules against it, and actively moderating to enforce those rules. At that point it’s as if the pedophiles are on a different website entirely - because they literally are on a different domain
As someone who actually uses it, I can confirm that I’ve never had or even heard of a run-in with pedophiles. Admins know the instances that allow it and quickly block and spread the word about any new ones that pop up. Again, it’s been more of an issue for me on tumblr than it’s ever been on masto

its not whataboutism at all, its that people have a fundamental misunderstanding of what mastodon is. the point here is that it is not a social network like tumblr, its more of a method for building social networks.all of which are run and independently hosted by different people.
